Over 20 years ago, our community member Rickie Slaughter was wrongfully convicted and has been incarcerated ever since. On March 3, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada vacated Rickie Slaughter's conviction, finding that prosecutors withheld evidence that would have supported Rickie’s innocence.
Yet Rickie is still incarcerated.
Why this matters now
His conviction was vacated. The DA is choosing to retry him.
After 22 years of wrongful imprisonment, the Clark County District Attorney's office is choosing to retry Rickie. The question our community is asking is: why is District Attorney Steve Wolfson wasting taxpayer funds?
Rickie has already lost more than two decades of his life. The Clark County District Attorney should drop the charges.
“He has already been in prison for 22 years. There is no need to reprosecute this case. They can drop the case. They've done it before.”
“If this was truly a system of justice, justice would demand that Rickie Slaughter would not be incarcerated. His conviction has been vacated by a federal court because of exculpatory evidence that would likely have seen Rickie released was improperly and unjustly withheld.”
Rickie continues to give back to his community.
Even while incarcerated, Rickie is an advocate for criminal justice reform. He works alongside lawmakers to research and draft legislation like the Second Look Act ( Assembly Bill 91).
He is the author of children's books Keylani and Nas Go to the Legislature and Milli Lights Up The City!, and host of the podcast Here, Rickie Speak.
Rickie also serves as a mentor and leader to youth in North Las Vegas, helping young people develop leadership skills and civic awareness.
